Some organised viewing events are stepping in to fill the gap. Health officials have also emphasised the projection method as a fallback for those unable to obtain certified glasses, which requires no specialised equipment at all.

The sell-out pattern reflects the particular dynamics of eclipse demand: it is sharply concentrated in the days immediately before an event, making it difficult for retailers to calibrate stock. Unlike recurring astronomical events such as meteor showers, a solar eclipse visible from a given location is rare enough to generate a one-time consumer surge with no reliable demand baseline. Retailers that stocked glasses opportunistically — a London bakery, tourism outlets in Cornwall — suggest the supply chain extended well beyond its usual specialist channels, yet still fell short. The UKHSA's 23 July guidance predated the worst of the sell-outs, meaning its cautionary message about online sellers is now landing in a market where certified options have been largely exhausted.
