Apple TV Orders Horror Thriller 'Ascension' from Alfonso Cuarón, Starring Caitríona Balfe
Apple TV has greenlit Ascension, a one-hour psychological horror thriller series from Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón, with Caitríona Balfe attached to play the lead role, Variety reports. The series is inspired by Last Days, a novel by Adam Nevill. Deadline notes that buzz about the pickup began circulating roughly a year before the official order landed.
Balfe plays Rose, a documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who investigates a mysterious 20th-century cult called the Church of Ascension. The role marks her return to television after Outlander wrapped its eight-season run on Starz in 2025 — a performance that earned her four Golden Globe nominations. Balfe also executive produces the series.
For Cuarón, Ascension is his second Apple TV project, following Disclaimer, a limited series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline that aired in late 2024 and drew nominations across the Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice Awards. Cuarón has received 11 Oscar nominations across his career, winning best director and best editing for Gravity (2014) and best director and best cinematography for Roma (2019).
Cuarón co-writes the series with his brother Carlos Cuarón, Natalie Erika James, and Christian White. All four serve as executive producers. James and White are co-showrunners — the day-to-day creative leaders of a television series — with James as lead director.
The producing roster runs deep. Cuarón executive produces under his Esperanto Filmoj banner, which holds an overall TV deal with Apple — meaning the production company has a standing agreement to develop projects for the platform. Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz executive produce alongside him for Esperanto Filmoj. Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden executive produce for Anonymous Content, which produces the series with Apple Studios as the studio.
Balfe has been building momentum beyond television. She is set to appear in the upcoming Apple original film Tenzing, along with the features Sense and Sensibility, A Long Winter, and The Housekeeper. In April 2026, she received the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture honour at the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards, CinemaCon announced.
For Apple TV, Ascension adds a horror-thriller title to a slate that already includes Cuarón's Disclaimer and the Balfe-starring Tenzing. No premiere date or episode count has been announced.
