Bill Nighy has been cast opposite Caitríona Balfe in Ascension, a horror-thriller series for Apple TV from Alfonso Cuarón. Deadline reported the casting on 26 October 2026.

Nighy will play Zac, a documentary maker who hires Rose to work with him. He joins as a series regular, which means he is part of the main cast and appears across the show rather than in a single episode or two.

Balfe plays Rose, a documentary filmmaker investigating a mysterious cult from the 20th century known as the Church of Ascension. The series is inspired by Last Days, a novel by Adam Nevill. Rose's search for the truth about the group sits at the centre of the story, and her working relationship with Zac drives much of what follows.

Behind the camera, Natalie Erika James and Christian White are co-showrunners. A showrunner is the person who oversees the writing and day-to-day making of a series, so the pair steer the show from script to screen. James is also the lead director. The writing credits go to James, White, Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón. Apple Studios is the studio behind the production.

The project was first made public in August. Apple announced that Apple TV had greenlit the series, meaning it gave the official go-ahead to make it. At that time Balfe was set to star in the series and also executive produce it, taking a senior producing role alongside the creative work.

For a viewer, the news is a clearer picture of who will be on screen. A straight-to-series order, which is how this project began, means Apple commissioned the show without first filming a pilot, the test episode a network often makes before committing. Nighy's casting is the most recent addition to a cast that is still taking shape.

Nighy and Balfe lead a story built around a documentary team and a cult that has not been forgotten. That combination is the reason the casting drew attention this week.
