Gundam Director Kamiyama Kenji Says His New Anime's Alien Threat Is a Metaphor for AI
The director of the next Gundam anime has revealed that its alien menace is a stand-in for artificial intelligence — humanity's own creation turning into something it cannot fully control.
Kamiyama Kenji told Variety that the hostile, self-replicating ecosystem at the heart of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is "a metaphor for technologies such as AI that humanity is already beginning to struggle to handle." The anime follows Ray Azumi, voiced by Takeo Otsuka, a war orphan who wakes up on the lunar surface as the pilot of an experimental mobile suit called Gundam ZERO. The story opens decades after humanity was forced to abandon Earth in the face of that alien threat — an ecosystem born from an alien object that delivered three discoveries: gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and cognitive materialization (the ability to turn thought into matter).
Kamiyama is known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, both of which carry weight in anime and animation circles. He said he chose to present humanity's exile from Earth as an everyday condition rather than a fresh trauma, so viewers could imagine for themselves what happened before the story picks up.
The world of RG XARX-ZERO is expansive. Kamiyama said it stretches from 50 years before the point where the story begins to "the start of another possible future" that could connect to later events. The anime is set roughly 100 years before the events of Gundam Rogue Orbit, a companion video game that shares the same universe. According to Kamiyama, the project actually started with the game first, and the anime's world was built out from there. Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO was announced on 23 July 2026 at San Diego Comic-Con's Gundam Showcase panel, as part of the RG Project — a next-generation Gundam initiative meant to expand the franchise.
