GTA 6 Pre-Orders Skew Premium: Buyers Favour the US$100 Edition Over the US$80 Standard

More players are pre-ordering the US$100 Ultimate Edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 than the US$80 Standard Edition, according to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick.
Speaking in a CNBC interview reported on 11 August 2026, Zelnick said pre-orders are "skewing more to the Premium Edition." His explanation was straightforward: the people pre-ordering earliest tend to be the series' most devoted fans, and they want the higher-tier package (VGC).
That price structure — US$80 for the Standard Edition, US$100 for the Ultimate — was set by Take-Two, the game's publisher. The US$80 standard price point sits above the US$70 that has been the common ceiling for new AAA releases (the industry's term for big-budget, high-profile titles) on console since the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026, within Take-Two's fiscal year 2027. The company has said that fiscal year will set new record levels of operating performance, driven by the GTA 6 release (Take-Two Investor Relations).
The franchise Zelnick is counting on has a track record few properties in any medium can match. Grand Theft Auto 5, released in 2013, has sold 230 million units across three console generations, he said in the same interview. The broader Grand Theft Auto series had sold-in over 335 million units worldwide as of Take-Two's 2021 Annual Report (Take-Two IR).
For anyone hoping for an early price cut, Zelnick was direct: there are no official plans to reduce the price of GTA 6 any time soon. Individual storefronts, however, may choose to discount the game on their own.
Take-Two reported its fiscal first quarter 2027 results on 7 August 2026, posting net bookings of US$1.39 billion and reiterating its full-year fiscal 2027 guidance (Take-Two IR). Net bookings — a measure of revenue from digital and physical sales recognised in the period — came ahead of the GTA 6 launch that the company expects to define the year.
Beyond GTA 6, Take-Two plans to release six additional titles during fiscal 2027, including NBA 2K27, whose cover athletes — Victor Wembanyama, Caitlin Clark, and Derrick Rose — were revealed on 22 July 2026.
Take-Two develops and publishes games principally through three labels: Rockstar Games (the studio behind Grand Theft Auto), 2K (home of the NBA 2K and BioShock series), and Zynga (the mobile-focused arm). Its common stock trades on NASDAQ under the ticker TTWO.
What makes the pre-order split notable is what it signals about spending intent. When the most engaged buyers — the ones committing money months before launch — choose the more expensive package, it suggests a willingness to pay premium prices for a franchise that has not had a new mainline entry in over a decade. Whether that pattern holds once pre-orders give way to general availability is a separate question, and one Take-Two will answer on 19 November.
