Djed Spence Nears Tottenham Exit as Inter Milan Close In on €30m Deal
Tottenham are prepared to let Djed Spence leave for Inter Milan this summer, with the Italian champions pushing to finalise a deal worth around €30m (£25.6m) plus bonuses (The Guardian).
Inter re-opened talks with Spurs over the 26-year-old wing-back this week, and the two clubs are moving closer to an agreement (talkSPORT, Yahoo Sports). Inter want to pay between €30m and €35m, and an agreement is likely to land only slightly above the £20m Spurs paid Middlesbrough for Spence in 2022. Personal terms between the player and Inter are not believed to be an obstacle.
Spence is keen on the move. He started four matches for England at this summer's World Cup, including the semi-final against Argentina, and those performances on the biggest stage caught Inter's attention (Gazzetta dello Sport). The Italian daily also reports that Spence has moved ahead of Moussa Diaby on Inter's list of targets — a wing-back, for the uninitiated, is a full-back pushed high and wide, asked to defend and attack in equal measure.
Inter need a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who joined Real Madrid earlier this window. Spence knows Serie A already: he spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Genoa, where Italian football got its first proper look at a player who had been released by Fulham as a teenager before rebuilding his career at Middlesbrough.
His situation at Tottenham shifted this summer. Spurs signed Andy Robertson from Liverpool, pushing Spence further down the pecking order under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who is expected to favour Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro as his full-back pairing. Spence signed a new four-year contract at the start of last season, but the landscape around him has changed quickly.
Tottenham have been one of the window's biggest spenders, laying out almost £240m on new players — including Sandro Tonali for a club-record £92.5m. They also confirmed on Monday that centre-back Mickey van de Ven has signed a new five-year contract. Inter, meanwhile, held separate talks with Spurs over Cristian Romero, but the Argentina defender looks set to join Atlético Madrid for €40m.
For Spence, the move offers a fresh start at a club that wants him. For Tottenham, it turns a player who slipped to the margins back into real money. A transfer that quietly makes sense for both sides now looks a matter of days from completion.
