Shaboozey's Concept Album 'The Outlaw Cherie Lee' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Independent Albums Chart
Shaboozey's fourth album, The Outlaw Cherie Lee & Other Western Tales, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart for the chart dated Aug. 15, 2026, published Aug. 11 (Billboard). The 20-track concept album, released July 31 on the American Dogwood/EMPIRE label, also opened at No. 3 on the Americana/Folk Albums chart, No. 4 on Top Country Albums and No. 12 on the Billboard 200, the magazine's flagship album ranking.
The record earned 31,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the July 31 through Aug. 6 release-tracking week, according to Luminate, the data firm that powers Billboard's charts. Equivalent album units convert streaming and track sales into a single album-sales measure, so the figure reflects both physical sales and streams across the album's tracks.
The album tells the story of its fictional title character through songs and spoken-word vignettes. Sam Elliott, Jamie Foxx and Teyana Taylor contribute voice parts, while Leon Bridges, Gunna, Kehlani and Orville Peck appear as musical guests. Shaboozey cited George Lucas, Pink Floyd's The Wall and Western art and photography as creative influences behind the project, which he announced in April 2026 and teased with a full track list and features reveal later that month.
Several album cuts made immediate chart entries. "Cowgirl" vaulted from No. 22 to a new peak of No. 11 on Hot Country Songs, Billboard's country singles ranking. "Bullets & Blades," featuring Kehlani, debuted at No. 42 on the same chart, and "Burn It Down," with Leon Bridges, opened at No. 50.
The arrival follows a breakthrough run for the Virginia-born artist. His previous album, Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going, debuted in June 2024 at No. 1 on both the Independent Albums and Americana/Folk Albums charts, reaching a No. 2 best on Top Country Albums and No. 5 on the Billboard 200. His single "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" topped the Hot Country Songs chart for 45 weeks, the second-longest command in that chart's history. Across his career, Shaboozey has now placed 12 songs on Hot Country Songs, with one reaching No. 1.
On this week's Independent Albums chart, The Outlaw Cherie Lee & Other Western Tales sits ahead of Bad Bunny's Debi Tirar Mas Fotos at No. 2 and Jason's 30 Number One Hits at No. 3.
For fans, the concept-album format means the record is built to be heard start to finish rather than track by track, with the spoken-word interludes and guest cast stitching the narrative together across its full 20-song running order.
