The Daily Show Turns 30: Audition Tapes of Famous Correspondents Released
The Daily Show has celebrated its 30th anniversary by releasing audition tapes of some of its most famous correspondents — the tryouts that launched careers before anyone knew the names.
The show posted the footage on its official TikTok account (@thedailyshow), beginning with a compilation titled "TDS Auditions Part 1" and tagged with the hashtag #TDS30. The anniversary video featured Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Josh Johnson, John Oliver, Samantha Bee, Jessica Williams, Roy Wood Jr., Rob Riggle, Wyatt Cenac, Jason Jones, Ed Helms, and Rob Corddry, according to Deadline.
The Daily Show premiered on July 22, 1996, with Craig Kilborn as its first host. Kilborn ended his run after 386 episodes on December 17, 1998. Jon Stewart took over on January 11, 1999, and stayed in the anchor chair for over 16 years. Trevor Noah then hosted for more than seven years after Stewart's departure.
Stewart returned to host the show's Monday episodes in 2024, while correspondents rotate through the anchor chair for the rest of the week — a format the show still uses.
What makes the audition tapes fun to watch is the contrast. Several of the people in those early tryouts went on to become household names in comedy and late-night television. Seeing them before the polish — before the desk, the suit, and the live audience — is a different kind of reveal than a retrospective clip package. It is the version of a correspondent that existed before The Daily Show made them one.
The show has not announced further anniversary programming beyond the audition-tape releases.
