Coventry City Agree £6m Deal to Bring Gustavo Hamer Home
Coventry City have agreed a £6m deal to re-sign midfielder Gustavo Hamer from Sheffield United, three years after selling him to the same club for £15m. The transfer brings a fan favourite back to the Coventry Building Society Arena and reunites Hamer with the club where he made his name in English football.
Hamer first joined Coventry in 2020 from PEC Zwolle, a mid-table Dutch side, and quickly became the heartbeat of their midfield — the player who set the tempo, won the ball back, and chipped in with goals. His standout season came in 2022-23, when his performances helped drive Coventry to the Championship play-off final (the end-of-season mini-tournament that decides promotion to the Premier League). That summer, Sheffield United, fresh off their own promotion to the top flight, paid £15m to take him to Bramall Lane Coventry Telegraph.
His time in South Yorkshire did not go to plan. Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League in the 2023-24 season, but Hamer's individual output was productive: he scored 22 goals and provided 29 assists in 123 appearances across all competitions for the Blades BBC Sport. Those are strong numbers for a midfielder at any level, and they speak to the consistency that first attracted Coventry to him.
Before England, Hamer's career took shape in the Netherlands. He came through the ranks at Feyenoord — one of Dutch football's traditional big three — and also played for PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie, the Dutch top flight. Born in Brazil but raised in the Netherlands, he represented the Dutch national team at youth level BBC Sport.
For Coventry, the £6m fee represents a significant reduction on the £15m Sheffield United originally paid. Hamer returns older, more experienced, and with Premier League minutes behind him. For a Coventry side looking to push for promotion from the Championship again, bringing back a player who already knows the club, the system, and the expectations is a pragmatic piece of business.
