Fulham Agree £30m Deal for Shea Charles as Summer Overhaul Continues
Fulham have agreed a £30m deal to sign Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, with the 22-year-old Northern Ireland international expected to complete a medical and sign a five-year contract at Craven Cottage The Guardian.
The fee breaks down to £26m up front plus £4m in performance-related add-ons. That price tag was enough to scare off Leeds United, who had explored alternative interest but balked at the asking price.
Charles played roughly 2,000 minutes in the Championship last season as Southampton reached the playoffs — the second tier of English football, where teams compete for promotion to the Premier League. Southampton were then excluded from those playoffs after revelations of spying on opponents, cutting their campaign short in controversial fashion.
For Fulham, Charles is the latest arrival in a summer of significant change. Manager Marco Silva has been replaced by Álvaro Arbeloa, formerly coach of Real Madrid's B team. The squad has been refreshed with young forwards Jonah Kusi-Asare and Gonzalo García and 21-year-old attacking midfielder César Palacios. Midfielder Sasa Lukik was sold to Ipswich earlier in the weekend, freeing space and budget in the centre of the park.
That Charles arrives to fill a midfield vacancy makes the pieces fit. Lukik's departure left a gap; Charles, who can operate in the middle of the pitch and has been a regular for Northern Ireland despite his young age, steps straight into that space.
Away from west London, Trevoh Chalobah's move to Como was confirmed on Sunday. The 27-year-old England defender joined the Italian club from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £25.7m, signing a contract that runs until 2031 Como 1907. Chalobah had been at Chelsea since joining the club's academy at the age of nine.
Como's head coach is Cesc Fàbregas, the former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder. Chalobah said the chance to work with Fàbregas again — the two overlapped at Chelsea — was a factor in his decision to head for Lake Como.
Coventry, meanwhile, have been busy. Gustavo Hamer returned to the club from Sheffield United for £6m plus add-ons, rejoining the side he left in a £15m move. Since Hamer's departure, Coventry have been promoted to the top flight, making this a homecoming at a higher level. The club also signed £24m goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and £25m Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi in the days before the weekend.
Elsewhere, Idrissa Gueye joined Saudi Pro League newcomers Diriyah as a free agent after leaving Everton at the end of last season. Hull signed Swedish wing-back Elliot Stroud from Mjallby on a four-year deal. And reports linked Sporting Lisbon centre-half Ousmane Diomande with a £30m move to Nottingham Forest, though that one remains in the rumour stage.
The transfer window rarely sleeps in August. Fulham's spending under Arbeloa, in particular, signals a club reshaping its identity after parting with Silva — and Charles is the centrepiece so far.
