Barcelona and Manchester City tangle over Rodri as Enzo Fernández emerges as the replacement domino
Barcelona have tabled an improved bid of around €60m (£51m) for Manchester City's Rodri, stepping up from an opening offer of €45m that City dismissed out of hand. Rodri is 30, a Ballon d'Or winner, and captained Spain to the World Cup. He has told those close to him that Barcelona is where he wants to be, and according to The Guardian, his departure from the Etihad is now seen as inevitable.
If Rodri leaves, City need a midfielder. They have identified Chelsea's Enzo Fernández — a 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina and Chelsea's current captain — as the leading target. Enzo Maresca, who managed Chelsea for a season-and-a-half before his tenure ended in January, is understood to be keen on a reunion. Fernández was central to the Chelsea side that finished fourth and won the Europa Conference League in 2024-25, then added the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer of 2025.
Chelsea want around £120m for their captain, a figure City consider steep. Any deal would likely involve add-ons — bonus-linked payments tied to performance milestones — to bridge the gap between the asking price and what City are willing to pay outright. Fernández's desire to leave Stamford Bridge has been an open secret for weeks; The Guardian reported in mid-July that the player wants out, and an earlier piece from the same month described his Chelsea future as "up in the air" following Argentina's World Cup run.
Should Fernández depart, Chelsea have already lined up a potential replacement. They have enquired about Bournemouth's Alex Scott, according to football.london, with the English transfer window closing at 11pm on deadline day and several decisions still pending.
City's summer business extends well beyond the midfield puzzle. They have already recruited Elliott Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m and are close to landing Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for around £85m. A new goalkeeper arrived too: Gerónimo Rulli signed a two-year deal following James Trafford's move to Leeds, returning to a club where he spent the 2016-17 season without making a senior appearance. If Fernández does arrive, Tijjani Reijnders could be the midfielder moved on to make room.
What makes this window feel different is the chain reaction. Rodri wants Barcelona. City want Fernández. Fernández wants out of Chelsea. Chelsea want Scott.
