Chelsea have told Manchester City to bid £120 million for Enzo Fernandez by 5pm BST on Friday — or drop the pursuit entirely (Sky Sports).
The ultimatum follows weeks of public courtship. City's interest in the Argentina midfielder has been the worst-kept secret of the summer window, and Chelsea have lost patience with the slow dance (Yahoo Sports). The story of how Fernandez got here is one of a relationship that soured, step by step. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's head coach, made Fernandez club captain when Reece James was injured and played him in 79 of his 92 matches in charge (BBC Sport). Fernandez responded with a career-best 15 goals last season, a return that Chelsea's own website described as "invaluable" — Maresca had encouraged him to push into attacking areas, and the midfielder thrived (Chelsea FC).
