Helldivers 2 Lands on PlayStation Plus as Devoid of Liberty Expansion Arrives

Helldivers 2, the co-op shooter that became PlayStation's fastest-selling game ever, joined the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium game catalog on 12 August 2026 — the same day its latest expansion, Devoid of Liberty, went live.
Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed the addition on the PlayStation Blog, noting that the August 2026 catalog update places Helldivers 2 on PS5 for subscribers at the Extra and Premium tiers. Essential-tier subscribers, who receive a smaller monthly selection of games, are not included. Eurogamer reports that more August titles will be announced soon.
Developed by Arrowhead Studios, Helldivers 2 launched in 2024 and has sold 20 million copies since. It later expanded to Xbox in September 2025, selling 926,000 copies in its first six days on that platform, according to Eurogamer. The game pits squads of players against alien threats in a satirical sci-fi universe — a live-service game, sold and updated in seasons after launch.
The Devoid of Liberty expansion brings a wave of new content. Players are tasked with destroying Illuminate spires and gateways, completing data reconnaissance, and infiltrating Illuminate structures with their team. The expansion introduces two new enemy types: the Wretch, a nimble foe that moves fast and can overwhelm weaker fighters while dodging counter-attacks, and the Crusher, a tank-like enemy on what the PlayStation Blog calls a "relentless death march" that can take heavy damage, dish it out, and regenerate unless worn down.
New allies arrive as well. SEAF platoons drop in via dropships to fight alongside the player's squad and provide medical support through stims — healing items that keep players in the fight. Planets within the Void's reach have been altered by strange mutations, with the effects growing more severe the closer a planet sits to the Void itself.
Players can now unlock 300 ranks, each carrying new privileges and rank titles. New secondary objectives include eradicating Void mutations, extracting materials for research, and opening secondary extraction zones to evacuate squads faster.
Sony has also issued a community challenge: players must collectively eliminate 500 million enemies by 18 August to unlock four Helldiver PlayStation avatars. It is the kind of large-scale, player-driven objective that has become a signature of the game — thousands of squads working toward a shared target, with the reward a set of profile pictures that signal participation rather than any in-game advantage.
For subscribers who have not yet tried Helldivers 2, the timing is generous. A game that has already sold 20 million copies and crossed from PlayStation to Xbox is now available at no additional cost beyond the Plus subscription, on the same day it receives a substantial free expansion. The next major update, Machinery of Oppression, is listed on PlayStation's official news page as available from 10 February 2026 for all owners on PS5 — though given the pace of updates, players may want to check current listings for the latest schedule.
