A Flat in Virginia Woolf's Childhood Home Is for Sale at £1.9 Million
A two-bedroom apartment on the fourth floor of Virginia Woolf's childhood home at 22 Hyde Park Gate in Kensington has been listed for sale by the estate agency DDRE Global for £1.9 million ($2.6 million) Artnet News.
The Victorian townhouse has three blue plaques — those circular heritage markers mounted on notable British buildings — and is associated with both Woolf and Winston Churchill. Woolf was born on 25 January 1882 and was raised at the address for 22 years, living there with her elder sister, the painter Vanessa Bell, and their father, the literary critic Leslie Stephen.
Stephen bought the property in the late 1870s and shared it with his second wife, Julia Duckworth. After Stephen's death in 1904, the house was sold and the grown-up children moved to Gordon Square in Bloomsbury, central London. There, Woolf and Bell formed the Bloomsbury Group with the writer Lytton Strachey, the novelist E. M. Forster, and the artists Duncan Grant and Roger Fry — a circle that shaped British art and letters for decades.
The apartment now on the market has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. DDRE Global describes it as a "beautifully balanced home that feels both elegant and quietly contemporary" Artnet News. The listing portal Rightmove calls Hyde Park Gate "one of London's most distinguished roads" Rightmove.
This is not the first time a flat inside the building has been offered. In 2024, the ground-floor apartment — which included the building's garden — was listed for £2.5 million ($3.3 million) Artnet News. Earlier coverage from the Evening Standard and House & Garden that same year reported a two-bedroom apartment in the building listed with Savills at a guide price of £2.45 million House & Garden — though it is unclear whether that was the same unit or a different one.
The building has a longer sales history. Rightmove's house-price records show a flat at 22 Hyde Park Gate, London SW7 5DH, sold in 2021 for £1,500,000, and another sale at the same address in February 1998 for £375,000 Rightmove.
For anyone who grew up reading Woolf, the appeal is obvious. The Kensington townhouse is where one of the 20th century's most influential novelists lived before she became one — before the Bloomsbury salons, before Mrs Dalloway, before A Room of One's Own. The flat itself is a conversion, not a time capsule. But the address still carries the weight of what happened there.
