Two actors, two identical handbags, one very awkward mix-up at a runway show. That is the premise of "The Swap," Marc Jacobs's fall 2026 campaign, unveiled on 13 August as the latest instalment in the brand's ongoing "Question Marc" storytelling series (WWD).

Rowan Blanchard and Jemima Kirke star in the campaign's first chapter, a short film set at the brand's spring 2027 runway show at the New York Public Library. The two sit near playwright Jeremy O. Harris and, on the way out, pick up each other's matching leather Scene handbags by mistake. Kirke discovers the swap only after finding Blanchard's personal belongings inside the bag she is carrying, and sets off across New York City to track down her own. The two reunite two days later at Bookmarc, the brand's bookstore, for a reading.

The campaign is explicitly episodic. Marc Jacobs has said "The Swap" expands "Question Marc" as an evolving storytelling series where each chapter introduces new characters, perspectives and cultural moments. The previous instalment, "The Scene," featured actor Rachel Sennott and explored the pursuit of visibility; the new chapter shifts focus to perception. More chapters are set to roll out throughout the autumn season.

The brand's own social media has been teasing the storyline for weeks. A behind-the-scenes post from August 2025 described the plot as "The Scene lands in the wrong hands and panic enters the chat," with two characters hunting each other's bag down (Instagram). The full film was promoted on Instagram as "A Marc Jacobs Production" titled "The Scene Swap," starring Kirke and Blanchard and featuring Harris (Instagram). The brand has characterised the campaign as more of a social media show than a traditional advertisement, centred on the Scene handbag (Instagram).

The Scene handbag range, which sits at the centre of the campaign, includes products called The Bag, The Wallet and The Card Case. The broader fall 2026 commercial lineup featured in the campaign spans ready-to-wear, handbags, footwear and jewellery. Prices run from $68 for a bow bag charm to $798 for a faux-fur leopard jacket (WWD). A separate tote from the fall collection, the Babe City Tote in black, has been promoted at the brand's Century City store in Los Angeles (Instagram).

What makes "The Swap" stand out is the way it folds a product into a narrative rather than placing it beside one. The Scene bag is not just shown; it drives the plot. The mistaken-handbag device gives the accessory a role that a conventional campaign shoot — model, bag, studio backdrop — would not. For the brand, that is the point: each "Question Marc" chapter is built around a cultural moment, and the autumn 2026 moment is a two-woman caper across Manhattan with a leather bag at its centre.
