Rebecca Hall Stars as Her Own Masked Double in Maison Margiela's Horror Campaign Film
Rebecca Hall plays an actress haunted by her own doppelgänger in "Anonymity," a two-minute psychological-thriller film that doubles as Maison Margiela's Fall 2026 campaign, debuting on 9 September 2026 (NSS Magazine).
Directed by Thibaut Grevet, the film casts Hall — known for The Prestige and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and no stranger to horror after The Awakening (2011) and The Night House (2020) — opposite a masked version of herself. The double wears the Artisanal masks created for Maison Margiela's fall 2026 show, the house's handmade couture-level pieces staged in April amid stacks of shipping containers in Shanghai (WWD).
The campaign video leans hard into horror imagery. A television screen bleeds. Clear goo spills from Hall's mouth. Ghostly figures step out of closets. At one point, Hall speaks Greta Garbo's famous line "I want to be alone" directly to camera (WWD).
Hall cited three filmmakers as the campaign's influences: Dario Argento, Brian de Palma and David Lynch — a trio whose work sits at the intersection of beauty, violence and the uncanny (WWD).
The campaign's release on a Wednesday coincided with the fall 2026 collection arriving in stores and online — a marketing rhythm the fashion industry calls a drop, when a season's clothes become available to buy and the accompanying imagery lands to drive attention to them (WWD).
Maison Margiela, the Paris-based house owned by the Italian group OTB, has form with this approach. Its 2021 campaign "A Folk Horror Tale" showcased the Artisanal couture collection through film, reflecting a long-standing attachment to cinema. The house's Spring 2026 campaign film, titled "Joy," enlisted composer Max Richter (The Impression).
Hall, for her part, is no casual presence at fashion-week shows — she was photographed in the front row at the Fforme Fall 2026 ready-to-wear presentation (WWD). "Anonymity" gives her a different seat: not watching the show, but inside it, playing both the woman and the mask.
