Ash Gardner Apologises as Cricket Australia Backs Vice-Captain Amid Relationship Fallout
Ash Gardner, Australia women's cricket vice-captain, has apologised for the pain caused by her marriage breakdown and thanked Cricket Australia for backing her continued leadership, following public revelations of a relationship with teammate Georgia Voll.
Gardner's affair with Voll while married to her ex-wife Monica Wright became public after Wright herself revealed it, according to News.com.au. Wright then publicly questioned Cricket Australia's silence on the matter, citing what she called "a clear power imbalance" when a senior member of the team has a relationship with a junior player. She argued Gardner should not remain vice-captain.
In an Instagram post on 13 August, Gardner addressed the situation directly. She wrote that while her separation from her wife is a personal matter, she understood her current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia given her position as vice-captain, as The Guardian reported. She expressed gratitude for the time she and Monica shared, said she was sorry for the pain caused, and wished Monica happiness and success. She also said she would make no further public comment and asked that the privacy of those involved be respected.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg confirmed the organisation had been made aware of the relationship between Gardner and Voll before it appeared in the press. He said the relationship was "new news" in the media but that those in and leading the team had been well across it for some time. Greenberg backed Gardner to remain in the vice-captaincy.
To address concerns about conflict of interest, Greenberg said additional policies would be put in place where relationships between players had been disclosed. Specifically, he said guardrails would ensure perceived or real conflicts around selections are removed and that Gardner would not be involved in those decisions.
