HBO's 'Lanterns' Lands August 16: Eight-Week DC Mystery with Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler
HBO's DC series Lanterns premieres Sunday, August 16, 2026 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, arriving simultaneously on HBO and the streaming platform HBO Max. The show runs eight episodes, released one per week on Sunday nights, with the finale set for October 4 (Deadline, 2026-08-13).
That means a weekly cadence — the old-fashioned broadcast model where audiences get one episode at a time rather than a full-season drop. Episodes air on August 16, 23 and 30, September 6, 13, 20 and 27, and the finale on October 4.
Lanterns stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, a new recruit, and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, a veteran Green Lantern — the intergalactic peacekeepers from DC's long-running Green Lantern comics. The two are drawn into a murder investigation in the American heartland, framed as a dark, Earth-based mystery rather than the cosmic spectacle the Green Lantern name might suggest (Deadline, 2026-08-13).
The series is co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with Mundy serving as showrunner — the writer-producer who oversees the writers' room and holds final creative authority on day-to-day production. The executive producer roster also includes James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-heads of DC Studios, alongside Ron Schmidt and director James Hawes.
Hawes directs the first two episodes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also directing across the season. The ensemble cast beyond Pierre and Chandler includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
The official trailer, released on July 24, carries the Green Lantern oath tagline "No evil shall escape their sight" and confirms the August 16 arrival (YouTube, 2026-07-24). Warner Bros. Discovery's pressroom also promoted the trailer through its brand channels.
For viewers, the scheduling is straightforward. A linear HBO slot at 9 p.m. ET/PT each Sunday, a simultaneous stream on HBO Max, and eight weeks to see the story through to its finale on October 4. No mid-season breaks announced. One episode a week, the way television used to work.
