Queen Camilla Heads to York's Ebor Festival as King Charles Settles in at Balmoral
Queen Camilla will attend the first day of the Ebor Festival at York Racecourse on Wednesday, 19 August, in her role as the racecourse's patron, where she is due to present the trophy for the Juddmonte International Stakes, the meeting's feature race (Hello!).
The Ebor Festival is one of flat racing's most prestigious meetings, held each August at York. The Juddmonte International Stakes, a Group 1 contest over a mile and a quarter, is widely regarded as the race meeting's centrepiece.
Camilla is also expected to meet what the household has described as "unsung heroes" at the course, among them St John Ambulance volunteers and the jockey Joe Fanning, alongside representatives of local charities (Hello!). The engagement places her at one of the racing calendar's best-attended fixtures while much of the Royal Family is dispersed for the summer recess.
While the Queen is at York, King Charles is expected to remain in Scotland, travelling from the Castle of Mey to Balmoral Castle on the Aberdeenshire estate that has served as the royal family's summer retreat since Queen Victoria's purchase of the estate in 1852. Balmoral closed its doors to the public in preparation for the King's arrival, though the gift shop and café have remained open during set hours. The castle's grounds are expected to reopen to visitors from early October (Hello!).
The King and Queen typically stay at Birkhall, an 18th-century house within the Balmoral grounds, while the main castle is used for larger family gatherings (Hello!). Charles and Camilla are officially welcomed to the estate with a ceremony at the gates that usually takes place in mid-August (nine.com.au). The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, along with Mike and Zara Tindall and their family, usually join the King at Balmoral later in the month (Woman&Home).
Charles began his Scottish trip earlier in August with a visit to the Mey Highland Games, where he was pictured enjoying a dram of whisky, and a visit to Caithness. The Court Circular, the official daily record of royal engagements, records that on 7 August the King received Mr Bernard Flannery at the Castle of Mey and invested him with the Insignia of a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order — an honour in the King's personal gift for services to the Crown. The same day he visited Dingwall to mark its 800th anniversary as a royal burgh and met representatives of Dingwall Mart.
Other members of the Royal Family have been carrying out engagements across the country. On 5 August, the Princess Royal, as Patron of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, attended the dress rehearsal at Redford Barracks. That same day, the Duchess of Edinburgh, Patron of the Hallé Concerts Society, was at a Promenade Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. On 2 August, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh closed the XXIII Commonwealth Games at the Hydro in Glasgow, having earlier been preceded by the King's message to open the Games on the same date. On 10 August, the Duchess visited the Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team at the Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead as Royal Patron of the UK Armed Forces Winter Sports Association.
Official engagements are published on the royal.uk Royal Diary up to eight weeks in advance, with Royal Communications issuing operational notes to media roughly 5–10 days before each event. Past engagements appear in the Court Circular, which records the working schedule of every working royal day by day.
