Queen Camilla Opens the Ebor Festival in the Rain, With King Charles at Balmoral
Queen Camilla braved a rainy Wednesday at York Racecourse for the first day of the 2026 Sky Bet Ebor Festival, attending as Patron of the course while King Charles remained at Balmoral in Scotland. The 2026 festival runs from Wednesday 19 August to Saturday 22 August, with Ladies' Day falling on Thursday 20 August and paired with the Legends Global Yorkshire Oaks (York Racecourse).
Hello Magazine reported the Queen's solo appearance on the opening day, noting that photographs were supplied by Getty Images. King Charles had attended a formal welcome ceremony at Balmoral Castle on Tuesday and stayed in Scotland rather than travelling south for the races (Hello Magazine).
The Queen's visit to York came on the same day she gave a rare interview to cancer charity Maggie's. In it, she recalled King Charles's words to her following his 2024 cancer diagnosis: "I'm going to cope." The interview was reported by Hello Magazine on 19 August (Hello Magazine).
Queen Camilla became Patron of York Racecourse in June 2024, according to BBC News, and has since made the Ebor Festival something of a fixture in her diary. At the 2024 festival she officially opened the Bustardthorpe development at the course. At the 2025 festival, held the following August, she presented jockey Ryan Moore with the winning trophy for the Yorkshire Oaks and unveiled a plaque marking the Juddmonte International race being recognised as the World's Best Race of 2024 by the Longines World Racing Awards. She was welcomed on that visit by the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Martin Rowley BEM (BBC News).
The 2025 festival drew an estimated 70,000 attendees across four days and 28 races. During that visit the Queen was also presented with a jar of honey by Selina and Harry Silk of Knavesmire Nectar, whose bees are based at the racecourse. The Queen keeps her own beehives and discussed the difficulties of beekeeping with the Silk family (BBC News).
Getty Images' editorial caption for its photographs of the 2026 appearance records that the Queen attended on the second day of the festival, which appears to conflict with Hello Magazine's reporting that she was present on the first day. Hello Magazine's 19 August article is the more recently published source and describes the outing as a Wednesday appearance at the opening day. Yahoo Sports UK had also reported on 18 August that the Queen's visit would take place on Wednesday 19 August (Yahoo Sports UK; Getty Images).
The Ebor Festival is one of the highlights of the flat-racing calendar, named after the Ebor Handicap first run in 1843. Whether the Queen presents trophies again this year, as she did for Ryan Moore in 2025, will be recorded by the Court Circular in due course.
