Aaron Sorkin Returns to Facebook: 'The Social Reckoning' Arrives This October
Aaron Sorkin is heading back to Facebook. His new film The Social Reckoning, a companion piece to 2010's The Social Network, reaches theatres on October 9, 2026, released exclusively in cinemas through Columbia Pictures (Deadline; Sony Pictures).
The film picks up the Facebook story more than a decade after The Social Network left off. This time the source material is not a Ben Mezrich novel but the Wall Street Journal's "The Facebook Files" — a series of articles by reporter Jeff Horwitz published in October 2021 that exposed harms caused by the platform (Deadline). Jeremy Allen White plays Horwitz. Mikey Madison plays Frances Haugen, the Facebook whistleblower whose internal documents fuelled the reporting.
Jeremy Strong takes on Mark Zuckerberg — the role Jesse Eisenberg originated sixteen years ago. Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, who played Eduardo Saverin in the original, will not return. Sorkin has said Eisenberg turned the film down because he was tired of being "conflated" with Zuckerberg (Deadline). Strong, for his part, emailed Zuckerberg directly about taking on the role (Deadline).
At CinemaCon in April 2026, Sorkin offered a first look and described Strong's Zuckerberg as a "professional defendant" (Deadline). A trailer followed in June. The film is described as more of a thriller than its predecessor, and not a "straight sequel" — though it revisits Zuckerberg and the company he built (The Guardian; Deadline).
The cast runs deep. Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen, Betty Gilpin, Gbenga Akinnagbe and Anna Lambe all feature, alongside Aidan Laprete, Kelley Pereira, Nelson Franklin, Portia Doubleday, Patrick Fischler, Joey Brooks, Sierra Capri and Tehmina Sunny. Mosaku appears in the first trailer (Deadline).
Sorkin directed from his own screenplay and produced alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser. The executive producer roster includes Lauren Lohman, Roger McNamee, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove (Deadline).
The title, release date and the Madison and White castings were made official toward the end of September 2025 (Deadline). Columbia Pictures — a Sony label — will handle the theatrical release.
Where The Social Network dramatised the founding of a company, The Social Reckoning trains its sights on the reckoning that followed. October 9 is the date to circle.
