Lionel Richie Jokes About Chris Brown's Legal History Onstage, Brown Responds: "We Love Ya Paw Paw"

Lionel Richie found a way to compare his current tour with Earth, Wind & Fire to Usher and Chris Brown's 2026 stadium run — and landed a jab about Brown's legal record while doing it.

During a stop on his Sing a Song All Night Long Tour, Richie told the crowd about the Usher–Brown co-headlining venture: "Usher and Chris Brown… The Commodores with Earth, Wind & Fire, we were doing that back 40 years ago! Only difference is, between then and now, we didn't go to jail." Billboard

The remark pointed at Brown's well-documented legal history, which includes a 2009 guilty plea to felony assault following an attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna. More recently, Brown pleaded guilty in July to a charge stemming from a 2023 altercation at a London nightclub and is scheduled to be sentenced in the U.K. on 26 October.

An Instagram clip of Richie's comments began circulating online, and Brown himself responded in the comments section. He wrote: "damn unk. We love ya paw paw" — followed by four laugh-cry emojis. The exchange stayed light, at least on the surface.

Richie's own tour pairs his decades of solo and Commodores hits with Earth, Wind & Fire's funk and soul catalogue across a 26-stop North American run that was announced in January. The trek is scheduled to wrap on a Friday in Austin, Texas.

Brown, meanwhile, is midway through The R&B Tour with Usher — a co-headlining stadium trek that began in June and runs through December, with stops including Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The two tours sit in different eras of R&B but share the same co-headlining blueprint: two headline acts pooling their catalogues in a single night. Richie's point, joke aside, was that the format is nothing new.

Brown's legal matters extend beyond the U.K. sentencing. He also recently reached a settlement to exit a lawsuit that accused him of withholding royalties from a co-writer of his 2022 track "Monalisa," Billboard reported in June.

For Richie, the onstage moment adds a bit of spice to what has been a fairly straight-ahead victory-lap tour. Whether the two artists cross paths during the overlapping legs of their runs remains to be seen — but Brown's comment suggests there's no hard feelings, at least not yet.
