Channel 5 to Air Documentary Digging Into Nigel Farage's Finances
Channel 5 has commissioned a 60-minute documentary asking a blunt question about Reform UK leader Nigel Farage: where does his money come from? Titled Nigel Farage: Where Does the Money Come From?, the film is produced by ITN Productions and scheduled to air on Saturday, 22 August at 9.30am BST on the Paramount-owned UK broadcaster (Deadline).
The documentary's synopsis says it will unravel the combination of donors, companies and payments reportedly giving Farage more than £2 million in outside income since he entered Parliament in 2024, plus millions more over his political career. Expert contributors will examine reported payments, donations and gifts from two crypto financiers to trace the source of his money (Deadline).
At the centre of the scrutiny is an undeclared £5 million ($6.7 million) donation made in 2024 from Christopher Harborne, a crypto billionaire. Parliament's standards watchdog is investigating (PBS NewsHour). Farage says he did not need to declare the money because it was a personal gift used to fund his security and was received before he was elected (WRAL).
That investigation was paused when Farage resigned his Clacton seat and triggered a by-election — a local election held to fill a vacant parliamentary seat. It is now back underway (Deadline).
The by-election itself was unusual. The major parties refused to stand candidates and branded the contest a stunt. That left Count Binface — a novelty character played by Jonathan Harvey, who campaigns on satirical pledges — as Farage's main competition. Farage won with 22,232 votes to Binface's 9,455. He stayed away from the count, reportedly the first politician to do so since 1981. Reform UK claimed a "credible threat" to his safety was the reason, but numerous news outlets reported that police refute that account (Deadline).
Federico Ruiz, Commissioning Editor at Channel 5, said topical, reactive documentaries are part of the channel's DNA and that questions around Farage's finances matter to viewers (Deadline). Behind the camera, Jeremy Daldry, Deputy Head of Factual at ITN Productions, serves as executive producer, with Katie Harris and Chris Price-Morgan as producer-directors. Post-production was handled in-house at ITN Post. ITN Productions previously made The Beckhams' Billions: How Did They Get So Rich?, a documentary in the same investigative vein (Deadline).
The 9.30am weekend slot is an early berth for a documentary carrying this much political weight. For Farage, the film lands while the standards investigation grinds on.
