Prime Video Orders Four-Part Gary Lineker Documentary Series for 2027
Prime Video has ordered a four-part documentary miniseries titled Lineker, charting the 50-year career of England's record goalscorer and longtime Match of the Day host Gary Lineker. The series will launch globally on the streaming platform in 2027, with Orchard Studios producing (Deadline).
Prime Video is calling it "the definitive story" of Lineker's life — from his childhood in Leicester through a football career, 26 years hosting the BBC's Match of the Day, and his more recent turn as a podcast entrepreneur. The series will draw on archive footage and unseen personal material, featuring what the platform describes as "unfiltered, honest interviews" with Lineker himself, alongside commentary from family members, fellow footballers, friends and critics (Deadline).
A central thread of the documentary is Lineker's shift from his "Mr Nice Guy" reputation on the pitch to becoming an outspoken and, at times, divisive figure in British public life. That reputation was tested during his departure from the BBC, which was accelerated after clashes with bosses who said some of his social media posts breached the corporation's impartiality rules — including a repost of a video containing an antisemitic trope, for which Lineker apologised (Deadline).
Executive producer Nat Lippiett framed the series' appeal plainly: "Everyone has their own Gary Lineker. The World Cup hero, the Match of the Day presenter, the activist or even the face of crisps." Fellow executive producer Dan Grabiner — a former Amazon Studios UK chief — said the series "goes beyond the headlines to reveal the many sides of one of Britain's most recognisable and divisive figures" (Deadline).
The documentary arrives as Lineker's media footprint keeps expanding beyond the BBC. He hosts The Rest is Football, a podcast co-produced by Goalhanger, the UK media company he set up with Tony Pastor. Netflix picked up the podcast and hosted a daily edition during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring Lineker alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. Netflix subsequently renewed the show following its World Cup coverage (Instagram, 21 July 2026). Goalhanger also released a short film about the podcast's journey, from Lineker's first meeting with Pastor to its move onto Netflix (Broadcast Now, 24 July 2026).
For viewers, the documentary promises access to a figure who has spent five decades in the public eye — as a player, a broadcaster, a businessman and, increasingly, a voice people either champion or challenge. Whether it lands as the "definitive" account Prime Video claims will depend on what Lineker and those around him are willing to say on camera. The 2027 release gives the producers time to shape it.
