Julia Jacklin Covers Sugar Ray's 'Every Morning' for Triple J's Like A Version
Australian songwriter Julia Jacklin has covered Sugar Ray's 1999 single 'Every Morning' for triple j's 'Like A Version' segment, the long-running weekly cover series on the Australian national youth radio station. The performance was published on triple j's official YouTube channel on 13 August, with the station promoting it across its Instagram the following day (Pitchfork).
Jacklin's take runs at a slightly slower tempo than the original, which fronted Sugar Ray's album 14:59 and became one of the defining pop-rock radio hits of its era. She told triple j she chose the song because it had stuck with her since childhood (ABC/triple j).
Triple j also released a behind-the-scenes video on the making of the cover, in which Jacklin and her band walk through the arrangement choices behind the performance (ABC/triple j; YouTube).
The cover arrives ahead of Jacklin's next studio album, The Gem, scheduled for release on 25 September via the label 4AD, the independent label group whose roster has included Pixies, The National and Big Thief (Pitchfork). Jacklin named the album after a pub in Melbourne, where she recorded it with her band.
For fans, the triple j appearance offers an early listen to Jacklin's current sound before the full album lands — and a chance to hear a late-'90s radio staple reframed through her voice.
