Keyla Monterroso Mejia Joins Scrubs Season 2 as Turk's New Surgical Nurse
Keyla Monterroso Mejia is checking into Sacred Heart. The actress, known to HBO viewers as Maria Sofia Estrada on Curb Your Enthusiasm, has joined ABC's Scrubs reboot as a recurring guest star for Season 2, according to Deadline.
Monterroso Mejia will play Mimi, a surgical nurse assigned to Turk — the character played by Donald Faison. Mimi is described as quirky, sassy and high-energy, a loyal assisting hand for the surgeons who arrives as the hospital navigates staff changes. Those changes include the departure of charge nurse Raymond, played by X Mayo, from the series Deadline.
The show's second season also promotes Ava Bunn to series regular. Bunn plays intern Sam Tosh and now joins the top-billed trio of Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke — the original Scrubs leads who returned for the revival as characters J.D., Turk and Elliot, now described as having levelled up from interns to icons at Sacred Heart.
Behind the camera, Bill Lawrence — the creator of the original Scrubs and the force behind current hits like Ted Lasso and Shrinking — serves as executive producer through his Doozer Productions banner, alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer. Showrunner Aseem Batra runs the writers' room, with Braff, Faison and Chalke also holding producer credits. The series is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
For Monterroso Mejia, the Scrubs role adds to a growing list of comedy credentials. She recurs as Petra, Seth Rogen's harried assistant, on Apple TV+'s The Studio, and as teacher's aide Ashley on ABC's Abbott Elementary. Her upcoming work includes recurring roles on the second season of Apple TV+'s Bad Monkey opposite Vince Vaughn and the third season of Netflix's Nobody Wants This Deadline.
Scrubs fans will not have long to wait. The revival returns to ABC on Wednesdays starting 30 September, with episodes streaming on Hulu the following day.
