Beef Season 2 Leads the Emmy Field With 16 Nominations — and Its Creator Called the People Left Out First
Beef's second season earned 16 Emmy nominations, the most of any limited or anthology series this year, according to Variety. Netflix's own Tudum newsroom confirmed the count on 10 July, ahead of the Television Academy's full nominee list. Across both seasons, Beef has now accumulated 29 total nominations, 8 wins and 1 honour, per the Academy's records.
Creator Lee Sung Jin became the first Asian television creator to receive multiple nominations in writing, directing and producing for the same series — and he has done it twice, as Variety reported on 14 August. Season 2 stars Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac (as Josh Martin), with Charles Melton earning a supporting-actor nomination confirmed by Netflix Tudum.
Lee's first reaction to the nominations was not celebration. He told Variety he started counting and realised two people were missing: Cailee Spaeny and Finneas, both part of the season 2 cast, were not nominated. His first phone calls after the announcement went to the artists who had been left out.
The season's most talked-about episode, 'The Inexpressible Comfort,' runs 33 minutes and takes place entirely in an emergency-room waiting area. Lee wrote and directed it after spending ten and a half hours in a Los Angeles hospital, jotting observations into his phone. He told Variety every extra in the episode was a real person he had seen there in real life.
One storyline will not make it to screen. Lee shelved a planned plot about a New York Giants family plotting to rob Tom Brady. He shared the detail with Variety without elaborating on why it was set aside.
Lee also used the nominations moment to flag broader industry pressure. He cited a statistic that networks produced 46 fewer shows in 2026, and he noted a quiet rollback of DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — initiatives across Hollywood. Separately, the Television Academy moved the limited-series supporting-acting categories off the main Emmy telecast this year, alongside the directing and writing categories that were already displaced. For a show whose nominations span exactly those writing and directing fields, the timing is hard to miss.
For fans, the 16-nomination haul means Beef's second season will be front and centre when the Emmys are handed out. An official companion podcast is streaming alongside the series on Netflix.
