Adam Scott's Daughter Sat Through an Acting Class Where His Office Audition Was Used as a Cautionary Tale

Adam Scott's daughter enrolled in a summer acting programme in New York. On the first day, the teacher played two audition tapes for The Office — Scott's and John Krasinski's — and asked the class to discuss why Krasinski got the part and Scott did not. The teacher had no idea Scott's daughter was sitting right there.
Scott told the story on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on 13 August 2026, alongside fellow guests Sebastian Maniscalco, Ella Rubin, and musical guest Dogstar. His daughter, he said, was mortified. The teacher only realised who she was as the class was walking out — and felt terrible about it. (The Hollywood Reporter, 14 August 2026)
Scott had auditioned for the role of Jim Halpert, the dry-witted salesman who became one of The Office's breakout characters. The part went to Krasinski. Scott eventually found his way to the same creative orbit: he worked with Office writers Mike Schur and Greg Daniels on Parks and Recreation, playing Ben Wyatt, and later took the lead in Severance, Apple TV+'s dystopian workplace thriller.
Scott was in New York filming the third season of Severance while his daughter attended the programme. He noted that nearly two years had passed since the cast finished shooting the second season of the drama. Beyond that, he was tight-lipped: he told Fallon he could not share anything about what happens in the new episodes and does not know when the season will premiere. (The Hollywood Reporter, 14 August 2026)
He also touched on co-starring with Robert De Niro in an upcoming project during the same appearance. (BroadwayWorld, 14 August 2026)
What makes the audition story land is the sheer coincidence. An acting teacher picks what reads as a textbook example of a near-miss — a capable actor who simply was not the right fit — and the actor's own child is in the room to hear the verdict. Scott did not name his daughter during the segment, and The Tonight Show's "Coloring Book" bit, which uses guest photos as colouring pages, featured a picture of Scott holding her as a baby. The full interview and a separate short covering the audition anecdote are available on The Tonight Show's YouTube channel. (Short, published 14 August 2026)
For Severance fans, the appearance confirmed that Season 3 has wrapped filming but offered nothing on a release date. For everyone else, it confirmed that Scott can take a joke at his own expense — even when his daughter is the one who has to sit through it first.
