First Look at 'The Bluey Movie': Disney and BBC Reveal the Animated Hit's Big-Screen Debut
Disney and BBC Studios have released the first look at The Bluey Movie, the first theatrical adaptation of the animated series Bluey, set to reach cinemas on 6 August 2027. The announcement, reported by Variety on 15 August 2026, confirms that the world's most-watched Australian blue heeler family is finally heading to the big screen.
Series creator Joe Brumm writes and directs, with Richard Jeffrey — who directed Bluey Seasons 1–3 — on board as co-director. Jeffrey also returns to voice Bluey's dad, Bandit. Melanie Zanetti reprises her role as Chilli, Bluey's mum. Both have been the voices behind the Heeler parents since the show's early days.
Behind the camera, Amber Naismith, whose credits include The Lego Movie, produces. Jeff Bush provides the score. The film is a Ludo Studio production, with executive producers Joe Brumm, Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson for Ludo, and Justine Flynn for BBC Studios. David Greenbaum, president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, oversees the project for Disney — the studio executive responsible for shepherding Disney's live-action and theatrical slate.
The deal structure is straightforward: BBC Studios finances and licenses the film, while Walt Disney Studios handles theatrical distribution worldwide. In Australia, the film will also air on ABC iView and ABC Kids after its theatrical run, as reported by The Wrap. For those outside the industry, that means the BBC is putting up the money and Disney is putting the film into cinemas — a partnership between public broadcaster and Hollywood studio that the two companies first signalled in December 2024, when Disney's own newsroom confirmed a theatrical Bluey feature was in the works.
Bluey premiered in 2018 and has since become a phenomenon on both sides of the Pacific. It was the most-watched series worldwide on Disney+ in 2024, per Variety. The show has collected an International Emmy Kids Award and a BAFTA Children's and Young People's Award. Disney Entertainment co-chairs Alan Bergman and Dana Walden have previously praised Bluey for uniting families with stories built around play, imagination and connection.
For fans, the first-look reveal marks the moment a streaming and television favourite makes the jump to the format that started it all — the cinema. A release in early August 2027 places the film squarely in the summer corridor, when family audiences are out of school and box-office competition is at its peak. Nearly a year of build remains between now and opening day, but the key pieces — creator at the helm, original voices, studio backing — are all in place.
