Leeds United agree £8.5m deal for Swiss defender Nico Elvedi
Leeds United have agreed an £8.5m deal to sign Swiss defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach, with the 29-year-old set to end an 11-year stay in Germany for a move to Elland Road (BBC Sport).
Mönchengladbach accepted an offer worth an initial £6.8m, with a further £1.7m in add-ons. The package also includes a 15% sell-on clause — meaning the German club would pocket a slice of any future transfer fee Leeds receive for Elvedi (Yahoo Sports). Elvedi is travelling to England for a medical on Monday. Leeds manager Daniel Farke confirmed the deal is close but cautioned that medical checks and paperwork still need to be completed, saying he expects something to happen within the next 48 hours (BBC Sport).
For Elvedi, it closes a chapter that started when he was a teenager. Eleven years at one club is rarity in modern football, and Mönchengladbach's sporting director Roland Schröder has already said the club is prepared for his departure and searching for a successor.
Elvedi brings 73 caps for Switzerland to Yorkshire — a substantial international pedigree for a side looking to solidify after promotion back to the top flight. He is a versatile defender, comfortable at centre-back or right-back, which gives Farke options as Leeds prepare for the step up.
The move could also unlock a departure. Once Elvedi arrives, fringe defender Sebastiaan Bornauw is expected to join Hamburg on an initial loan with an option to buy — a chain reaction that trims the squad and raises funds.
Leeds begin their Premier League campaign away at Nottingham Forest next Saturday. Whether Elvedi is registered in time for that opener depends on how quickly the medical and paperwork move, but the 48-hour window Farke referenced puts completion squarely before the season kicks off.
