Mariska Hargitay Confirms Jalen Brunson Is Getting a Role on Law & Order: SVU
Jalen Brunson's offseason wish is coming true. Mariska Hargitay has confirmed that the New York Knicks star will appear on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Hargitay broke the news at the HBO Max Emmy Nominee Celebration, telling Variety on August 16, 2026, that Brunson's SVU role is "definitely happening" and that the point guard is "open and ready" Variety.
The story began with a championship celebration. In June 2026, Brunson led the Knicks to an NBA title against the San Antonio Spurs. When a reporter asked about his offseason plans afterward, Brunson's answer was not about rest or recovery. "Try to get on SVU," he said Variety.
Law & Order: SVU, the long-running NBC procedural now in its streaming era, has been Brunson's favourite show, and Hargitay — who has played Captain Olivia Benson since the series launched in 1999 — is, in his words, his "favourite fan" Variety. Their friendship has played out publicly over the years, with Hargitay courtside at Knicks games and cheering Brunson on as he became the face of the franchise.
Hints had been building for weeks. On August 13, Hargitay appeared on the Today show to discuss her upcoming role hosting the Primetime Emmy Awards. When Savannah Guthrie pressed her about Brunson, Hargitay whispered, "Don't tell anyone, but see him on SVU" NBC. Days later, the whisper became a flat confirmation.
Even former SVU star Christopher Meloni weighed in. Meloni, who played Detective Elliot Stabler on the series before departing and later returning in his own spinoff, Organized Crime, told TMZ Sports that Brunson "absolutely" has what it takes to land a role on the show TMZ.
Hargitay is already thinking about awards. She joked that she wants to help Brunson earn an Emmy nomination, adding that he "can't handle any more awards" after his NBA championship Variety.
What role Brunson will play, how many episodes he will appear in, and when filming takes place have not been disclosed. The Knicks' 2026–27 season schedule and SVU's production calendar will both factor into the timing.
Hargitay's admiration for Brunson has not been quiet. In an emotional comment shared by the NBA in July, she wrote that Brunson "embodies the heart, the grit & the fight of this city" NBA on Facebook. For a show filmed and set in New York, casting the player who just brought the city its first NBA championship in decades carries a particular symmetry.
Whether Brunson plays a victim, a witness, a suspect, or someone on the right side of the law remains to be seen. What is certain is that one of New York's biggest basketball stars is about to step into its most famous television precinct.
