Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm on August 16 after its eye passed the southern tip of Hawaii's Big Island, ending the possibility of the island's first direct hurricane landfall in 155 years. But the storm's near-miss path still caused severe damage: at least one fatality, more than 100 homes destroyed, and flash floods that swept occupied houses off their foundations in the coastal communities of Na'alehu and Wai'ohinu near South Point (The Guardian).

Governor Josh Green confirmed that at least one person died in a car accident in the South Point area. Green also reported that at least three Hawaii hospitals were running on generator power and that 19 roofs were lost during the storm. A multi-agency search-and-rescue mission involving civil defense, the National Guard, and the Coast Guard was launched after flash floods carried several occupied homes off their foundations in Na'alehu and Wai'ohinu. The Punalu'u Bake Shop in Naalehu, a well-known local landmark, was severely damaged, with roughly 3 feet of mud left in its factories and retail store, according to manager Zachary Kennedy (The Guardian).

Power infrastructure took a major hit. Tropical storm warnings remained in effect for Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau as the storm moved west. Rainfall totals were the central concern for the Big Island's higher elevations. The National Hurricane Center expected 10 to 20 inches of rain across the island, with maximum totals of 25 inches possible (NHC). Forecasters warned that higher-elevation windward slopes, dominated by Mauna Kea, could receive as much as 35 inches (89 cm) of rain, with total accumulations approaching 3 feet (1 meter). The National Hurricane Center cautioned that wind speeds atop mountains and on windward and leeward slopes are often up to 30% stronger than near-surface winds used to categorize storms, a factor that compounds the risk of life-threatening mudslides in steep volcanic terrain (The Guardian).

As of the NHC homepage update at 00:05 UTC on August 17, no tropical cyclones were present in the Atlantic basin or the Eastern North Pacific east of 140°W, leaving Lala as the sole active system in the Central Pacific region.

The broader context here is the particular vulnerability of the Hawaiian Islands to storms that do not make direct landfall. Hawaii's steep volcanic topography, particularly on the Big Island, means that orographic lift — the process by which air is forced upward by terrain, cooling and condensing into heavy rain — can amplify rainfall well beyond what a cyclone's category alone would suggest. Think of it as a ramp: moisture-laden air hits the mountain slopes and is pushed upward, squeezing out far more water than would fall over flat ground. The NHC's own guidance that mountaintop winds can exceed surface-category winds by 30% points to the gap between a storm's Saffir-Simpson classification (the 1-to-5 scale used to rate hurricane intensity) and its actual ground-level impact. Lala, rated Category 1 at peak intensity, produced rainfall and flooding consequences more typical of a higher-category system over mountainous terrain. The destruction of more than 100 homes and the displacement of residents in Na'alehu and Wai'ohinu show how a storm that technically skirts an island can still generate catastrophic localized effects through orographic precipitation and flash flooding in coastal valleys with limited drainage infrastructure.

The scale of the power outage, exceeding 200,000 customers across three islands, also points to the fragility of Hawaii's island-grid architecture. Each island operates its own electrical grid, which means there is no neighboring network to draw power from when one goes down. With three hospitals on generator power, the margin between widespread outage and outright medical-system disruption was narrow.
