Manchester City close in on €100m teenager Bouaddi as Rodri era ends with Barcelona move

Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign Lille's 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi for a fee that could reach €100 million (£85.6m), according to the BBC — a deal they want to conclude this week after agreeing to sell Rodri to Barcelona.

The out goes a 30-year-old Ballon d'Or winner. The one coming in was playing three days after his 16th birthday. The contrast is stark, and it is entirely the point.

Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d'Or recipient — football's individual highest honour, voted by journalists — is set to complete a £65m move to Barcelona on a four-year contract, according to the BBC. He leaves after seven seasons, 298 appearances, and a trophy cabinet that would need its own room. He joined from Atlético Madrid in 2019 for a then club-record £62.8m. Last season he led Spain to their second World Cup title and was named player of the tournament.

Injuries have bitten, though. A serious knee injury sidelined Rodri for much of the 2024-25 campaign, and a hamstring problem disrupted parts of last season. At 30, the player who was arguably the most influential midfielder in world football during City's peak years is moving on.

Enter Bouaddi. Born in Senlis, northern France, he made his Lille debut in October 2023 — three days after turning 16 — and has since played 88 times for the club. He helped Lille finish third in Ligue 1, France's top division, in 2024-25. He started all five of Morocco's matches at the 2025 World Cup as they reached the quarter-finals. And he was the standout performer in Lille's Champions League victory over Real Madrid in 2024, a result that put Europe's elite on notice.

Personal terms between City and Bouaddi have been in place for a while, according to Sky Sports, with the two clubs now working to settle on a fee. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on 10 August that negotiations were moving to final stages. Lille's head coach, Davide Ancelotti, confirmed City's interest publicly on 15 August, per The Telegraph. The BBC reports the deal is now very close.

It has not been a straightforward chase. Lille's president, Olivier Létang, said as recently as 16 July that he expected Bouaddi to stay one more season, L'Équipe reported. Arsenal have also been pursuing the teenager. Bouaddi returned to Lille training on 31 July while City's courtship continued, caught between a club that did not want to sell and a club determined to buy.

City's midfield rebuild does not stop there. The BBC reports they also hold interest in Chelsea's Enzo Fernández, with manager Enzo Maresca — who worked with Fernández at the London club before taking the City job — retaining a strong interest in the Argentina international.

For fans, this is the moment a dynasty reshapes its engine room. Rodri was the player City built around — the one who made everything tick. Bouaddi, eight inches shy of his 20th birthday, has 88 senior appearances, a World Cup quarter-final run, and a Champions League night against Real Madrid on his résumé. Whether he can fill the space Rodri leaves is the question that will define City's season. The answer starts the moment the paperwork is signed.
