Manchester City Agree €95m Deal for Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi

Manchester City have agreed a deal with Lille worth €95m (£81.4m), plus a further €5m in potential add-ons, for 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, according to The Guardian. Bouaddi was pulled out of Lille's Ligue 1 match against Angers to undergo a medical with City, and the transfer is expected to become official in the coming days.

The fee had been a sticking point throughout the summer. Lille held firm on a €100m valuation as early as mid-July, when City first made their interest known and a host of other suitors circled. By 10 August, the two clubs were still negotiating, though Bouaddi had already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract, ESPN reported. The final structure — a slightly lower base fee topped up by performance-related add-ons — got it over the line.

Bouaddi is a No 6: a defensive midfielder, the player who sits deepest and sets the tempo from the back. He made his Lille debut in a Conference League group game in October 2023, aged 16 years and three days — the youngest player ever to appear in that competition. By the summer he was starting five of Morocco's six matches at the 2026 World Cup, including the quarter-final defeat by France.

Much of the money funding this signing comes from a departure. Rodri, City's midfield anchor for years, moved to Barcelona the week before for £65m, The Guardian reported. His contract was running down, which made City reluctant sellers rather than willing ones; they had already rejected Barcelona's opening £38.5m bid before settling.

Bouaddi's arrival takes City's summer spending to nearly £200m, following the £116m signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier in the window. Anderson made his debut in City's Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Sunday.

City's midfield rebuild may not stop there. They have also targeted Roma's Manu Koné, expected to cost around £50m, The Guardian reported. And they retain interest in Chelsea's Enzo Fernández — but the two clubs are far apart on valuation, with Chelsea wanting £120m and City rating the Argentine lower.

For fans, the picture is straightforward. Rodri, the player who made everything tick, is gone. In his place arrives a teenager with a World Cup on his résumé and a price tag that tells you how highly Europe rates him. Whether Bouaddi is ready to fill those boots straight away is the question City have just spent €100m asking.
