Warwickshire Tie Down Yates, Garton, Jani and Malik on Two-Year Deals
Warwickshire have handed two-year contract extensions to four players — opener Rob Yates, all-rounder George Garton, and rising batters Vansh Jani and Zen Malik — securing the core of a squad chasing honours across formats at Edgbaston. Yates, 26, has been the Bears' steady hand at the top of the order since breaking into the first team in 2019. He has amassed 4,547 first-class runs — the multi-day format of county cricket — including 15 centuries, and has increasingly turned his off-spin to useful effect in both red-ball (multi-day) and white-ball (one-day and T20) cricket. Garton's extension is the gamble that comes wrapped in upside. The 29-year-old former England T20 international (T20 being the shortest, most explosive format, 20 overs per side) arrived from Sussex ahead of the 2025 season. He showed his pedigree by smashing a maiden Bears century in the One Day Cup against semi-finalists Nottinghamshire in July, but injuries have repeatedly interrupted his rhythm. When fit, he gives Warwickshire a genuine all-rounder — someone who can swing the new ball and hit boundaries down the order.
The third name, Jani, is the one for followers of the county's academy pathway to feel good about. The 21-year-old, born in Middlesex, broke through this summer with 394 runs at a healthy clip in the One-Day Cup, including four half-centuries in eight innings. For the uninitiated, a half-century — 50 or more runs in a single innings — is the benchmark for a significant batting contribution, and four of them in eight trips to the crease marks a settled, reliable young player rather than a flash of beginner's luck.
Malik's story carries the most colour. The Stoke-born 28-year-old signed his first professional contract at the end of 2024, having previously agreed terms that kept him with the club. His standout moment of the season came in June, when he smashed 99 off just 46 balls — a breathtaking strike rate of over 215 runs per 100 balls — to win the local T20 derby against Worcestershire at Edgbaston.
