HYBE Donates $300,000 to Colombia Earthquake Relief Through Fundación Ábaco
HYBE, the South Korean entertainment company behind BTS and dozens of other K-pop acts, is donating 1 billion Colombian pesos — roughly $300,000 — to support communities affected by the earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10 (Billboard).
The 7.4-magnitude quake, described by officials as the strongest to hit the country in a decade, killed 289 people as of August 16, with 143 still missing and nearly 4,000 injured. Colombian authorities reported over 14,000 homes and structures completely destroyed. The donation, made through HYBE America on behalf of its parent company, will be coordinated by Fundación Ábaco, a Colombian nonprofit that channels resources to communities hit by emergencies and humanitarian crises. HYBE said the funds will address immediate needs and support longer-term recovery.
The European Union separately pledged €2 million (about $2.3 million) in aid for the affected communities on August 12 (Reuters).
The donation draws on ties that HYBE chairman Bang Si-Hyuk and his company have been building in Colombia. Bang has been involved in the local music industry, including Medellín Music Lab, a public initiative led by the mayor's office in that city. Isaac Lee, the chairman and CEO of HYBE America, is Colombian. HYBE has been expanding its footprint in Latin America through its U.S.-based division as part of a broader global growth strategy, and the relief contribution places the company in direct contact with the communities it has been courting commercially.
A corporate donation to a disaster zone is, at one level, a straightforward act of aid. In this case it also arrives through a company actively building business relationships in the region — which means the gesture carries a commercial dimension alongside the humanitarian one. Neither dimension cancels the other out. The funds will reach Fundación Ábaco regardless of motive, and the communities facing displacement, injury and bereavement have needs that far exceed any single contribution.
