Drake left a compliment on Ella Langley's Instagram on Sunday, August 16, and it took almost no time for fans to start demanding a collaboration. The comment — "Goated pen 🖊️," slang for a writer operating at the highest level — appeared under a post Langley captioned "Texas forever 🤍," recapping her recent Texas shows (Billboard; Instagram).
The exchange did not come from nowhere. The day before, Saturday August 15, Langley posted a TikTok in which she lip-synced along to "HYFR (Hell Ya F--king Right)," the 2011 Drake and Lil Wayne single. Drake's Instagram comment followed roughly 24 hours later (Billboard).
Langley is having the kind of year that makes a co-sign from one of the biggest rappers in the world feel less like a surprise and more like an overdue nod. Her single "Choosin' Texas" logged an 18th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the chart dated August 22, the fourth-longest reign in that chart's history. Her sophomore album Dandelion, released in April, topped the Billboard 200 — the flagship US albums ranking — with 169,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, the metric that converts streaming plays into album sales.
