Hayden Panettiere Autopsy Finds No Signs of Trauma; Cause of Death Still Pending

The Greenville County Coroner's Office has completed Hayden Panettiere's autopsy and found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death, according to Deadline. Coroner Mike Ellis stated that Panettiere had no visible injuries at the time of her death. The cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies.
Panettiere, best known for starring roles in the NBC series Heroes — where she was cast at age 16 — and the country-music drama Nashville, died at 36. A friend found her unresponsive inside her Greenville, South Carolina, home and called 911 at approximately 1:50 p.m. on a Sunday in August 2026, reporting an "unresponsive female," per Deadline. The 911 call also reported a female in cardiac arrest, according to TMZ.
Paramedics attempted to resuscitate Panettiere using advanced cardiac life support — a standard set of emergency interventions for cardiac arrest — but she was pronounced deceased at the scene. On the 911 audio, medics discussed a possible "overdose" and "cardiac arrest," Deadline reported. TMZ separately reported that the death was being investigated as a suspected drug overdose, though the coroner's office has not yet confirmed a cause.
A fire engine and coroner's truck were present at the scene, TMZ noted. The outlet also reported that Panettiere had been seen using crutches and complaining of back pain in the months before her death. Her final recorded comments, per TMZ, were about her daughter Kaya.
Three months before her death, in May 2026, Panettiere published a memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, Deadline reported. The book joined a public chapter in the actress's life that had long been followed by entertainment media.
The autopsy findings narrow the physical picture of Panettiere's death — no trauma, no visible injuries — but the central questions remain open. The coroner's office says additional studies are needed before a cause and manner of death can be determined. No timeline for those results has been publicly stated.
