Clueless Sequel Series Lands at Paramount+ with Alicia Silverstone Returning as Cher
Paramount+ has greenlighted a Clueless sequel event series, with Alicia Silverstone set to reprise her role as Cher Horowitz — the character who made "as if" a national catchphrase back in 1995. The project, first reported by Deadline on 17 August 2026, picks up 30 years after the original film.
The journey to screen was not straightforward. The same sequel series was scrapped at Peacock in April 2026 before Paramount+ picked it up, according to Deadline. CBS Studios — which owns the television rights to the 1995 Paramount Pictures film — is producing, and the series landed at Paramount+ off a pilot script, with the remaining episodes still to be written as of the Deadline report. A pilot script pickup means the platform ordered the show based on that single script rather than filming a test episode first.
The story places Cher in a new chapter of life. She has mastered business and motherhood, until her daughter's high-school years leave her feeling clueless all over again — a mother-daughter dynamic that forms the spine of the series. Silverstone is joined behind the scenes by the original film's writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence, both serving as executive producers. The writing team consists of Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss, with Schwartz and Savage executive producing through their Fake Empire banner.
As for the rest of the original cast, the picture is still coming together. Paramount+ Head of Originals Jane Wiseman confirmed that no original cast members besides Silverstone have deals in place yet, per Deadline. The plan is to bring back as many of the film's stars as possible, including Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Wallace Shawn, Jeremy Sisto, and Breckin Meyer. Some of those actors have not yet been approached about returning, according to sources cited in the same report. Brittany Murphy, who played Tai Frasier in the original film, died in 2009.
The series has also secured a California TV tax credit, one of the latest recipients announced by the California Film Commission in August 2026 (Deadline). Filming is slated to begin in Los Angeles in 2027. No premiere date has been announced.
Wiseman left open the possibility that the event series — currently structured as a limited series, meaning a set number of episodes with a closed story — could continue beyond its initial run. That kind of flexibility is common in the streaming era, where a "limited" label does not always mean a single season if audiences show up.
For fans of the original, the involvement of Heckerling and Silverstone signals a sequel with direct lineage to the 1995 film rather than a reinvention from outside. The question of who else returns — and whether the writers can recapture the tone of a film that defined a decade of teen comedy — will not be answered until cameras roll.
