Paramount+ has ordered a Clueless sequel limited series, with Alicia Silverstone reprising her role as Cher Horowitz three decades after the 1995 film first hit cinemas. The project marks the streamer's first new series order from CBS Studios since Skydance acquired Paramount in August 2025 (Deadline).

The sequel picks up 30 years after the original story. Cher has mastered business and motherhood, but parenting a teenager leaves her feeling "clueless" all over again — the premise that gives the series its hook and its title its echo. Silverstone will also serve as an executive producer.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the duo behind Gossip Girl and The O.C., are writing the series alongside Jordan Weiss. Schwartz and Savage are executive producing through their Fake Empire banner. Original film writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence return as executive producers, keeping the creative lineage intact. CBS Studios, which holds the television rights to Clueless, is the studio behind the production.

The path to Paramount+ was not direct. The sequel project first landed at Peacock in April 2025. Peacock passed on it in April 2026, opening the door for Paramount+ to pick it up. The original 1995 film was released by Paramount Pictures, making this a homecoming for the property under the broader Paramount umbrella — though the TV rights have sat with CBS Studios (and its predecessor, Paramount Network Television) since the 1990s.

Clueless has a television history of its own. A 1996 TV adaptation ran for three seasons — one on ABC and two on UPN — with Rachel Blanchard stepping into the role of Cher, since Silverstone did not reprise the part for the small screen. That earlier series was produced by Paramount Network Television, the predecessor of what is now CBS Studios.

Filming is slated to begin in Los Angeles in 2027. The production is rumoured to have secured approval in the latest round of California TV tax incentives — financial rebates the state offers to productions that shoot locally, which help offset costs and keep filming in-state. That rumour, reported by Deadline, has not been formally confirmed.

For fans, the draw is straightforward: Silverstone back as Cher, Heckerling involved behind the scenes, and a premise that reconnects a beloved character to a new chapter of life. For Paramount+, the order signals continued investment in scripted originals under Jane Wiseman, who heads the streamer's original programming, and a fresh collaboration with CBS Studios in the post-Skydance-merger landscape.
