Alexa PenaVega Mourns Third Child-Star Death of 2026 After Hayden Panettiere's Passing
Alexa PenaVega has posted a heartfelt tribute after the death of Hayden Panettiere, writing that her "heart is heavy" and noting that Panettiere is the third fellow child star she has lost in 2026.
"Hayden, Michelle, Daveigh… my heart is heavy today," PenaVega wrote on social media. "These aren't just names from my childhood. They're girls I grew up alongside, sharing a world that was exciting and also incredibly hard. We were kids navigating something so big, and not everyone had the foundation or support they deserved" (Variety).
Panettiere died at 36 in Greenville, South Carolina. Police have reported no signs of foul play, and the Greenville County Coroner's Office confirmed she was found in cardiac arrest. Her cause of death was still to be determined as of 17 August 2026 (The Independent; ABC News). Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced the death in a statement provided to ABC News (WSMV). Her family called her "an incredible light and a force of nature" (US Weekly).
Panettiere broke out as a Disney child star in A Bug's Life and Remember the Titans, then became a household name on television with Heroes and Nashville. Michelle Trachtenberg, the second of the three, died in February 2026 at 39 from complications of diabetes mellitus, according to the New York medical examiner (Variety). She had starred in Harriet the Spy at age 10 and later played Dawn Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl. Daveigh Chase, who voiced Lilo in Lilo & Stitch and starred in The Ring, died on 16 June 2026 in Los Angeles at 35. The Los Angeles County coroner's office listed her cause of death as AIDS, with a secondary cause of chronic polysubstance use (Los Angeles County Coroner). Her father, John David Schwallier, told the New York Times she had been homeless and had struggled with drugs since the age of 13 (Variety).
All three were in their 30s. All three died between February and August.
PenaVega, whose own breakout came in 2001's Spy Kids, knew them personally. She and Chase walked part of the Freaky Friday red carpet together in 2003, one year after Chase voiced Lilo. PenaVega also attended the premiere of Panettiere's Raising Helen in 2004 (Variety).
She closed her statement with a message to readers: "Today, I'm grieving and holding their families close in my prayers and thinking of everyone still fighting battles we can't see. Hug your people close today" (Variety).
Three former child actors, all gone within six months. PenaVega's words carry the weight of someone who shared their world — and knows how hard that world could be.
