Greek Investigators Point to Mechanical Fault in Sifnos Helicopter Crash That Killed Two British Honeymooners

Greek police are focusing on a possible mechanical fault as the likely cause of the Bell 206 helicopter crash on the island of Sifnos that killed British honeymooners Marie Ebert and Alexander Cromie, along with their pilot Giorgos Raikos, on 17 August 2026. The privately chartered helicopter exploded on impact moments before it was due to land, leaving no survivors among the three people on board.
The crash occurred in the Tholos area of Sifnos, near the helipad close to the village of Exambela and the Panayia tis Vrysis monastery. A local resident, Antonis Zambelis, told Greece's public broadcaster ERT that the helicopter came down approximately 50 metres from houses and roughly the same distance from the landing spot. CCTV footage now under review shows the aircraft spiralling out of control as it approached the helipad, according to The Guardian. Multiple witnesses reported unusual sounds before the crash. Ebert, 30, and Cromie, 31, were London-based and had recently married. They had travelled to Sifnos from Athens. The island sits about 120 miles (195km) south-east of the Greek capital and is reachable only by ferry over several hours, which makes helicopter charter an attractive option for visitors seeking to bypass the sea crossing. The pilot, Raikos, 53, was identified by officials in Syros as a former Greek air force officer described as "extremely experienced."
Rescue workers discovered the remains of all three victims after the helicopter ignited in a fireball and thick smoke engulfed the crash site. Greece's ministry of infrastructure and transport is coordinating the inquiry. Sifnos mayor Maria Nadali said the community was shocked and working to manage the consequences of the incident next to the helipad.
The Bell 206 is a light utility helicopter with a long civilian service record, widely used for charter, news gathering, and corporate transport. As a single-engine aircraft, it depends entirely on one powerplant — meaning an engine failure in the final descent leaves a pilot with very limited options, particularly over rugged terrain with few forced-landing areas. The crash site's proximity to the helipad, roughly 50 metres from the landing spot, suggests the aircraft was in the terminal phase of approach when whatever went wrong became unrecoverable. CCTV showing a spiral rather than a controlled descent (what pilots call autorotation — using upward airflow through the rotor to maintain some control during an engine-out scenario) would be consistent with a loss of rotor authority, whether from a drivetrain failure, a tail rotor issue, or a catastrophic engine event.
The witness accounts of a strange noise and unusual rotor behaviour, taken together with the reported spiral trajectory, point investigators toward a mechanical rather than an operational or human-factors cause. That the pilot was described as extremely experienced and formerly military-trained reduces, though does not eliminate, the likelihood of pilot error as a primary factor. The investigation will need to examine maintenance records, the aircraft's total time in service, and any recent repair work on the engine or drivetrain.
