South by Southwest has unveiled its plans for 2027, and the Austin festival is adding a podcast festival, rolling out perks for local residents, and shuffling its venue map — all driven by a top-to-bottom renovation of the Austin Convention Center and the restoration of the Paramount Theatre on Congress Avenue (Variety).

The main festival runs March 15–21, 2027, with the SXSW EDU conference for educators kicking things off March 13–16, just before the main event (Variety). In 2026, SXSW reorganised itself as a seven-day event integrating film, music, TV, digital, and lifestyle strands into a central area of downtown Austin; the 2027 edition continues that consolidated format.

The headline addition is SXSW's inaugural Podcast Festival, scheduled March 17–21. Open to all badgeholders, it will feature live tapings and industry conversations. The programming builds on a partnership that began when Podcast Movement Evolutions — an annual gathering for the podcast industry — was first fully integrated into SXSW in 2026. Podcast Movement announced at last March's festival that Evolutions would return to SXSW in 2027 (Sounds Profitable). Beyond podcasts, the broader March 15–20 comedy and storytelling slate will include stand-up, improv, sketch, and storytelling (SXSW).

Construction is forcing the festival's hand on venues. With the Paramount Theatre — a historic Congress Avenue screening room — closed for restoration, some SXSW 2027 film premieres will shift to ACL Live at the Moody Theater, which seats about 2,800 people. The Film & TV Conference hub will relocate to the Driskill and Stephen F. Austin hotels. On the music side, the Music Clubhouse moves to The Thompson hotel, with conference programming split between The Thompson and The Westin (Variety).

SXSW is also introducing two new badges. The CxO Badge targets C-suite executives. The 512 Club — named for Austin's area code — is a new downtown home base offering perks and access to local residents during the festival. Badgeholders with an Austin zip code will receive special perks leading up to the 2027 launch (Variety).

For those who cover the festival, SXSW is now accepting applications for 2027 Press and Content Creator accreditation. The Press Application is for editorial journalists — newspapers, magazines, websites, newsletters, broadcast, podcasts, or freelance work. The Content Creator Application is for those whose primary platform is TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or LinkedIn. Applicants must choose based on where the majority of their SXSW coverage will be published; submitting the wrong form may delay review. Questions go to press@sxsw.com (SXSW).

For a festival that has spent four decades spreading across Austin, the 2027 edition pulls things tighter — fewer scattered venues, a denser downtown footprint, and a clear bet that podcasts and comedy deserve the same badge-tier stage as film and music.
