Comcast Turns Millions of Home Routers Into Motion Sensors — With a Privacy Catch

Comcast has introduced a feature called Wi-Fi Motion for its home routers, letting Xfinity customers detect movement inside their homes using the Wi-Fi signals already bouncing between their router and connected devices. TechCrunch reported the rollout on August 18, 2026.
The feature works on Comcast's advanced Xfinity gateways — specifically the XB7 model and newer, which are already in millions of households. Wi-Fi Motion works by watching for disruptions in the wireless signals traveling between the gateway and stationary connected devices like printers, thermostats, and smart plugs. When a person or large object moves through the coverage area, it disturbs the signal in a detectable way, and the system can send an alert. Wi-Fi Motion is opt-in. Users enable it through the Xfinity app, where they can switch between Home and Away modes. In Away mode, the system sends a notification to the user's phone when movement is detected, working as a basic, self-monitored layer of home awareness. Xfinity is clear about what the feature is not: it is not a home security service, it is not professionally monitored, and the company states it does not monitor motion within the home or the notifications sent to the user, regardless of mode. The feature is included as part of Xfinity Internet services at no additional charge. Coverage depends on the physics of radio signals — it only works in areas where strong Wi-Fi signals travel between the gateway and connected devices, so rooms with weak signal or no connected devices on the network are effectively blind spots.
The underlying technology is not new in the research world. Using Wi-Fi signals to detect motion has been an active academic topic for over a decade, typically by analyzing how signals change as they move through a space. What is notable here is the scale: Comcast is pushing this into millions of already-installed gateways through a software update, not a hardware refresh. The XB7 and newer gateways already have the wireless radios and processing capacity to support it. That makes this one of the largest commercial rollouts of Wi-Fi-based motion sensing to date.
The privacy terms, however, carry a catch that TechCrunch flagged in its reporting. Comcast's own support documentation states that the company "may disclose information generated by a customer's use of Wi-Fi Motion to third parties without further notice in connection with law enforcement investigations, disputes involving Comcast, or pursuant to a court order or subpoena." TechCrunch That language is broader than the privacy posture of many consumer smart-home devices, which typically limit data sharing to specific legal processes and provide user notice where legally permitted.
The disclosure clause deserves a closer look. Comcast's statement that it does not actively monitor motion data is consistent with a model where motion events are detected on the gateway itself and notifications are pushed to the user's phone without a continuous data stream flowing to Comcast's cloud. But the retained ability to disclose motion-derived information in disputes "involving Comcast" goes beyond the standard law-enforcement compliance language most consumers would expect. It suggests the company may hold or be able to access motion event logs, and that those logs could surface in civil proceedings not directly related to criminal investigations.
For Xfinity customers, the practical tradeoff is straightforward. Wi-Fi Motion adds a no-cost, no-additional-hardware layer of motion awareness to homes already equipped with compatible gateways and enough connected devices to create signal coverage. It will not replace a monitored security system, and Comcast says as much. But it may be enough for users who want a basic occupancy alert while away — say, a notification that someone entered the house during working hours — without buying dedicated sensors.
The privacy calculus is less straightforward. Opt-in is the right default, and Comcast's position that it does not monitor motion events in real time is a meaningful boundary. But the disclosure terms are written broadly enough that a user opting into motion sensing is also, perhaps inadvertently, opting into the creation of a data record that could be compelled in legal contexts they may not anticipate. For a feature marketed as home protection, that is a detail worth reading carefully before toggling it on.
