Netflix Reunites The Night Of Duo Steven Zaillian and Richard Price for Crime Limited Series Ghettoside
Netflix has ordered a six-episode limited series reuniting Steven Zaillian and Richard Price, the writing partnership behind HBO's acclaimed 2016 crime drama The Night Of, according to Deadline.
The new series, tentatively titled Ghettoside, is a crime and mystery drama co-written by Zaillian and Price. It draws on Jill Leovy's 2015 non-fiction book Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America, which examined homicide investigation in Los Angeles and the toll of unsolved murders on marginalised communities.
Netflix greenlighted the project off multiple completed scripts, meaning the order went straight to series without a pilot episode being shot first. Some details, including rights, were still being finalised at the time of the report. A representative for Netflix declined to comment.
Zaillian and Price executive produce alongside Garrett Basch, a frequent Zaillian collaborator who also worked on The Night Of and the Netflix limited series Ripley. Basch currently has three series in development at FX: Very Young Frankenstein, Seven Sisters and The Lowdown.
The pairing carries a strong track record. The Night Of, an eight-part HBO limited series that premiered in July 2016, drew 1.3 million viewers across its Sunday night debut and went on to earn 13 Emmy nominations and five wins, including Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Riz Ahmed. The series followed a complex New York City murder case, tracing both the police investigation and the legal proceedings that followed.
Zaillian's most recent Netflix project, Ripley — a limited series he wrote, directed and executive produced, starring Andrew Scott — was originally developed at Showtime before Netflix took it over. It earned 13 Emmy nominations and won four awards, including one for Zaillian's directing.
For fans of tightly built crime drama, the reunion is a straightforward draw: the two writers who shaped one of the past decade's most discussed limited series are working together again, on material rooted in real-world reporting rather than fiction.
