DOC NYC Names Visionaries Tribute Honorees: Alex Gibney, JT Takagi, Stephen Maing and Raney Aronson-Rath
DOC NYC has announced the honorees for its 13th edition's Visionaries Tribute, set for the festival's opening day this November at Gotham Hall in Manhattan. Four documentary figures will be recognised across three award categories, the festival confirmed on 18 August 2026 (Deadline).
Alex Gibney and JT Takagi will each receive Lifetime Achievement awards. Gibney, one of the most prolific documentary directors working today, won an Academy Award for Taxi to the Dark Side and earned an Oscar nomination for Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. His Primetime Emmy winners include Going Clear: Scientology & The Prison of Belief and Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God.
Gibney is having an especially busy festival year. He premiered Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie at Sundance earlier in 2026, and his highly anticipated documentary about Elon Musk is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
JT Takagi's career spans directing, sound engineering, and education. She serves as executive director of Third World Newsreel — a New York-based organisation dedicated to filmmaking by and about communities of colour and other underrepresented groups — and teaches at The New School and the City University of New York. Her directing credits include Bittersweet Survival, Homes Apart: Korea, The Women Outside, and North Korea: Beyond the DMZ. As a sound engineer, she recorded Yance Ford's Strong Island and Stanley Nelson's Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, both of which earned Emmy and Cinema Audio Society awards.
Stephen Maing will receive the Robert and Anne Drew Award for Documentary Excellence, named for the pioneering husband-and-wife filmmaking team credited with shaping American direct-cinema documentary. The award carries a $5,000 cash prize furnished by Drew Associates. Jill Drew, general manager of Drew Associates, praised Maing as a master of observational documentary whose work focuses on characters confronting oppressive power structures (Deadline).
Maing's most recent film, The Great Experiment, co-directed with Eric Daniel Metzgar, premiered in March at the True/False festival in Columbia, Missouri. His previous work includes Union (co-directed with Brett Story), Crime + Punishment, High Tech, Low Life, and The Surrender.
Raney Aronson-Rath will receive the Leading Light Award. She won an Oscar as a producer of 20 Days in Mariupol, the harrowing frontline documentary from the besieged Ukrainian city. Aronson-Rath serves as editor-in-chief and executive producer of Frontline, PBS's flagship investigative journalism documentary series, and leads the GBH Documentary Unit, which encompasses Frontline, Nova, and American Experience. She also executive produced One in a Million, a documentary that won an award at this year's Sundance.
DOC NYC co-founder and Director of Special Projects Thom Powers oversees the Visionaries event and commented on this year's honorees.
Now in its 13th edition, DOC NYC bills itself as America's largest documentary festival. The Visionaries Tribute serves as both a fundraiser and a marquee event on the festival calendar, gathering the documentary community to recognise careers and craft ahead of the festival's full programme.
