Sasha Bühler Exits Netflix After Seven Years Shaping German-Language Film

Sasha Bühler, Netflix's Director of Film for German-speaking Europe, has left the streaming company after seven years. Netflix confirmed the departure, which was first reported by Deadline on 19 August 2026. No next move has been announced.

Bühler joined Netflix in September 2019, hired by David Kosse, then the company's VP of International Original Film. Her original brief was expansive: Director of Original Film for Germany, France, the Nordics and Central and Eastern Europe, based in London, tasked with building regional teams and setting the creative strategy for Netflix's international original film division (Deadline). In 2021 she relocated to Berlin to focus on German-speaking Europe — the DACH territory, in industry shorthand, covering Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Her tenure coincided with Netflix's most decorated German-language production. Bühler oversaw All Quiet on the Western Front, directed by Edward Berger, which she recalled arrived at Netflix as an English-language project with a South African director before being retooled as a German-language film (Screen Daily). The film earned nine Academy Award nominations and won four, including Best International Feature Film and Best Cinematography. It also collected seven BAFTAs from fourteen nominations. According to Bühler, it reached Netflix's Top 10 list in 90 countries.

More recently, she greenlit and oversaw Exterritorial and Brick, both of which rank among Netflix's all-time top ten non-English-language films by viewership. Exterritorial was announced as a Netflix project in June 2025, with Bühler credited as the German-language programming boss who cleared it for production (Deadline).

Before Netflix, Bühler spent eleven years at Constantin Film, Germany's largest distribution and production company, as Head of Acquisitions and International Co-Productions. Her acquisition slate there included Florence Foster Jenkins, You Were Never Really Here, Dirty Grandpa and All Eyez on Me. Prior to Constantin, she held the Head of Acquisitions role at SquareOne Entertainment.

With her departure, Netflix said that Katja Hofem is currently leading all Netflix programming for Germany — spanning series, film, unscripted and acquisitions. That consolidates German-language film oversight under a single executive already running the broader content operation.

What stands out in Bühler's exit is the gap between her portfolio's visibility and her public profile. She was the executive who championed a German remake of a 1929 anti-war novel, pushed it through as a subtitled feature in a market that historically resists them, and watched it sweep the Academy Awards. For a streaming platform still proving it can produce prestige international cinema, that kind of credential carries weight — wherever she lands next.
