Virgin Music Group has signed a global distribution deal with Indian label Sur Music World, covering the Mumbai-based company's Bhojpuri and regional Indian music catalogue. The agreement was announced on Monday, August 17. Music Business Worldwide

Virgin Music Group is the independent artist and label services division of Universal Music Group — the world's largest music company. Under the partnership, Virgin will handle global distribution, audience engagement and digital marketing for Sur Music World's repertoire. Neither party disclosed the term or financial details of the agreement.

Sur Music World Pvt. Ltd. was founded in 2019 by Surinder Yadav. The company began not in music but in South Indian film content, picking up Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam film titles for digital release. It moved into music in 2023, focusing on Bhojpuri — a language spoken primarily in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, with a film and music industry that commands a large and devoted audience across northern India and among the diaspora.

The label's artist roster includes Pawan Singh, Shilpi Raj, Pramod Premi Yadav, Arvind Akela Kallu and Khushi Kakkar. Sur Music World also aims to expand into Hindi, Haryanvi, Punjabi, Marathi and Magahi repertoire, broadening its reach across India's major regional-language music markets.

Nagesh Jadhav, Senior Content Manager, Music & Video for Virgin Music Group, and Amol Suryavanshi, Label Manager at Virgin Music Group, are the executives named in connection with the deal.

The Sur Music World agreement is the latest in a series of India-focused signings by Virgin Music Group. In May, the company signed Punjabi singer Sunanda Sharma for global distribution of her future releases, starting with her single "Jogi." In June, it signed Gujarati folk singer Rajesh Ahir in a deal covering both his future work and his existing catalogue. In December 2024, Virgin struck a global distribution deal with India's Hungama Digital Media covering Indian regional repertoire. Virgin Music Group has also acquired Outdustry, an artist and label services and rights management business operating across China, India and other high-potential markets.

For context, distribution deals of this kind mean that a label like Sur Music World keeps its artists and creative direction while handing the mechanics of reaching global streaming platforms — Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and others — to a partner with the infrastructure to place and market that music internationally. Virgin's broader distribution roster already spans K-pop acts like BTS and TWICE, UK names like The 1975 and Disclosure, and Indian artists including Himesh Reshammiya and Tony Kakkar, according to the company's website. What makes the Sur Music World deal worth noting is the repertoire itself. Bhojpuri music is a high-volume, high-engagement sector of the Indian market that has historically been served by regional distributors and local streaming strategies. Placing it inside a global distribution framework gives these artists a path to listeners well beyond their home regions — and gives Virgin a deeper foothold in one of the world's fastest-growing music markets, which IFPI, the global recorded-music industry body, has ranked among its top ten by revenue.

Neither company has said when the first releases under the new partnership will reach streaming platforms.
