The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has found that a visible track defect — what investigators call a "track geometry irregularity" — appeared on forward-facing CCTV footage from train 1F34 and earlier services before a Southern train derailed near Lewes on 13 August 2026, injuring 30 people. The interim report, published on 19 August, also confirmed that passengers on other trains had reported rough riding at the same location, and that evidence of previous track maintenance work was present in the area The Guardian GOV.UK.

The train involved was 1F34, the 14:24 London Victoria to Eastbourne service operated by Southern (Greater Thameslink Railway). It derailed at approximately 15:54 on the Down Lewes line of Network Rail's East Coastway route, about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Lewes station, between Cooksbridge station and Lewes Tunnel. The maximum permissible speed at the derailment site is 70 mph (113 km/h). The train consisted of two class 387 electric multiple units — self-propelled carriages that don't need a separate locomotive — coupled together, totalling eight vehicles. Data from the train's on-board recorder (OTDR) indicates it was travelling at about 65 mph (105 km/h) as it approached the point of derailment, and that the driver applied the brakes as the train passed that point GOV.UK.

The rear three vehicles derailed and overturned, coming to rest on their sides on the embankment. The front five vehicles remained on the rails. Marks on the track near the derailment point are consistent with the wheels of the rear vehicles having climbed over the rails — a phenomenon known as wheel climb, where the wheel flange rides up and over the rail rather than staying guided within it. CCTV from both train 1F34 and preceding services on 13 August captured the track geometry irregularity on the approach to the derailment point before the accident happened. RAIB separately received multiple passenger reports of rough riding at the location. The presence of these warning signals before the derailment will focus scrutiny on whether the track monitoring and maintenance response was adequate. The identification of previous maintenance activity in the same area adds another layer: whether that work addressed the problem or, unintentionally, contributed to the conditions that led to the derailment.

The broader context here matters beyond East Sussex. Clay's susceptibility to moisture-driven movement is a well-documented challenge for earthwork stability across the UK rail network. Sustained high temperatures can dry out clay formations, and repeated cycles of drying and wetting can gradually weaken the track's foundations. The fact that the derailment occurred during the fifth heatwave of the summer places the Lewes incident within a wider pattern of climate-related infrastructure stress that network operators are increasingly forced to confront. The ORR's parallel investigation, alongside RAIB's continuing work, will help determine whether the failure lies in detection, in prioritisation, or in the physical limits of aging earthworks under changing climatic conditions. For an industry managing thousands of miles of clay-embanked routes through an intensifying cycle of summer heatwaves, the interim findings from Lewes are likely to resonate well beyond this one stretch of track.
