Arsenal have agreed a £51m deal to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, with the 28-year-old defender now set for a medical in north London, according to Sky Sports and The Athletic. The fee includes add-ons, and personal terms have already been settled.
The move has been brewing all summer. Sky Sports reported that Arsenal's interest in Konsa stretched back through the entire transfer window, while The Guardian noted as early as 25 July that the interest "was not going away." BBC Sport identified Konsa as Arsenal's first-choice defensive target — though the same report noted Aston Villa had been holding out for £60m. The two clubs have now found common ground in between.
The reason Arsenal need him is bluntly medical. William Saliba, the French centre-back who has become the spine of Mikel Arteta's defence, sustained a back injury in France's World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain and is not expected back before mid-October. Jurriën Timber, who can play at right-back or centre-back, has been managing a groin problem for months. That left Arsenal short of reliable cover at the back, and Konsa — a player who can slot into either position — fits the gap precisely.
Konsa joined Aston Villa from Brentford in 2019 and has since made 286 appearances for the club, establishing himself as a consistent Premier League performer and an England international. He had two years left on his Villa contract, which gave the Midlands club leverage but also a clear incentive to sell at the right price rather than risk losing value on a player entering his late twenties.
For Aston Villa, the sale comes amid a busy summer of reshaping the squad that won last season's Europa League — the continent's second-tier club competition, sitting just below the Champions League in prestige. Villa have already brought in Zion Suzuki from Parma for £30m, making the Japanese goalkeeper the first from his country to play in the Premier League, and completed the £17m signing of Matteo Ruggeri from Atlético Madrid. The club also rejected a near-£40m offer from Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal for striker Ollie Watkins, signalling that their willingness to sell is selective rather than wholesale.
For Arsenal fans, the appeal is straightforward. Konsa is a proven top-flight defender in his prime years, comfortable on the ball and experienced in European competition. He arrives not as a marquee name but as a practical solution to a problem that, left unaddressed, could have derailed the opening weeks of Arsenal's season.
